Mechanism of Action

Omeprazole, the active ingredient in Prilosec, is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). It works by blocking the enzyme in the stomach wall that produces acid, thereby reducing the amount of acid in the stomach. This helps heal acid-related conditions of the stomach and esophagus.

Contraindications

Prilosec should not be used in:

  • Patients with known hypersensitivity to substituted Benzimidazoles or any component of the formulation.
  • Patients receiving rilpivirine-containing products.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Stomach pain
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gas
  • Cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, and sore throat, especially in children.

Serious Side Effects:

  • Symptoms of low magnesium levels, such as muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, and seizures.
  • Signs of lupus, such as a rash on the nose and cheeks, and new or worsening joint pain.

Precautions

  • Even if Prilosec helps with your symptoms, it doesn’t rule out the risk of stomach cancer. Make sure to get additional tests to check for this.
  • Some people using this capsule may develop sudden kidney problems. If this happens, stop taking Prilosec and see your doctor.
  • This medication might increase the chance of getting a type of diarrhea caused by a bacteria called Clostridium difficile. Watch for signs and seek medical attention if necessary.
  • Using this medication for a long time or taking it frequently could raise the chances of breaking bones in your hip, wrist, or spine.
  • Prilosec might worsen lupus or cause it to appear for the first time. If you have lupus symptoms, talk to your doctor about stopping Prilosec and seeing a specialist.
  • Avoid taking Prilosec with clopidogrel, a blood thinner, as it can interfere with its effectiveness.
  • Long-term use of Prilosec might prevent your body from absorbing enough vitamin B-12. Your doctor may monitor your levels.
  • There have been cases of low magnesium levels in people taking Prilosec for a long time. Your doctor may check your magnesium levels while you’re on this medication.
  • Avoid taking Prilosec with St. John’s Wort or Rifampin, as they can reduce how well Prilosec works.
  • Prilosec might affect the results of tests for certain types of tumors. Stop taking Prilosec for at least 14 days before any such tests.
  • If you’re taking high doses of methotrexate, your doctor might advise stopping Prilosec temporarily, as it could interfere with methotrexate’s effectiveness.
  • Using this medication for a long time, especially more than a year, might increase the risk of developing polyps in your stomach. It’s best to use this capsule for the shortest time possible.
