What is Viibryd? 

Viibryd is a brand-name prescription medicine and its generic name is Vilazodone. This is used to treat the symptoms of major depressive disorder (MDD) or clinical depression.

This drug belongs to a class of drugs known as Miscellaneous Antidepressants. It is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) and partial serotonin receptor agonist type of antidepressant.  

Viibryd dosage 

Viibryd is available in tablet form and in three strengths: 10mg, 20mg, and 40mg. 

The recommended dosage of this drug is 40mg once a day.  

This medicine is usually started at an initial dose of 10 mg orally once a day for 7 days. It can be increased to 20 mg orally once per day for another 7 days. The dose can still be increased to 40 mg orally once daily after a week if necessary. 

There is no need to adjust the dose for patients with renal and hepatic impairment. 

Viibryd should be taken with food. If taken on an empty stomach, its efficacy may be reduced. 

Take Viibryd at the same time each day to help you remember and avoid missing a dose. 

When you missed a dose, take it as soon as you remember it. When it’s almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. You should not take a double dose at the same time.

Viibryd side effects 

Like many other medications, there may be unwanted effects or risks even if the drug is working. Some side effects simply go away once the body has adjusted to the medicine. However, some side effects may persist and become bothersome, you may contact your provider and ask for some advice on how to manage them.

Here are the common side effects of using this medication: 

• Diarrhea
• Nausea and vomiting
• Insomnia
• Dizziness
• Dry mouth
• Sexual problems like decreased sexual drive or interest and changes in sexual ability.

Call your physician right away if you experience any of the following serious side effects:

• Glaucoma symptoms such as eye pain, swelling or redness in or around the eyes, tunnel vision, blurred vision, and halos or rainbow around lights. 
• Convulsions or seizures
• A higher chance of bleeding is shown by unusual bleeding, easy bruising, nose bleed (epistaxis), gums that easily bleed, and gastrointestinal bleeding. This risk may be increased if Viibryd is taken together with aspirin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen, warfarin, or blood thinners.
• Symptoms of manic episodes are shown by too much happiness (euphoria), improper irritability, aggressive behavior, racing thoughts, heightened energy, very fast talking speed, and behaving recklessly.
• Symptoms of having low sodium levels in the body (hyponatremia) such as headache, confusion, lethargy, extreme weakness, memory changes, trouble concentrating, and unsteady feeling. 

Taking Viibryd may cause a very serious condition known as Serotonin Syndrome/Toxicity. This becomes riskier if you are taking other medications that can increase the serotonin levels in your body. Seek immediate medical help if you experience any of the symptoms of serotonin syndrome/toxicity such as headache, confusion, agitation or restlessness nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, rapid heart rate, loss of muscle control or twitching muscles, muscle stiffness, tremors, loss of coordination, shivering, and excessive sweating. 

Tell your doctor if you experience any new or worsening symptoms such as suicidal thoughts, actions or attempts, changes in your mood or behavior, difficulty sleeping, anxiety, panic attacks, feeling impulsive, irritable, aggressive or violent, restless or agitated, and great increase inactivity.

Seek medical help right away if you experience any symptoms of an allergic reaction to this drug such as redness, itching, trouble breathing, severe dizziness, and swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. 

Viibryd and alcohol 

Combining Viibryd and alcohol together is highly discouraged as it may worsen the patient’s depression symptoms. Alcohol intake can counteract the beneficial effects of Viibryd so it would be difficult to treat the symptoms.  

Antidepressants like Viibryd and alcohol both cause sedation and drowsiness, so when used together, the effect can be stronger. The combination of these two could also impair one’s alertness, thinking, and motor ability.

Trintellix vs Viibryd 

These two drugs are classified as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) types of antidepressants that are used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults only, and not approved for treating children. They are sometimes classified as atypical depressants.  

Trintellix and Viibryd have the same side effects such as diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, sexual dysfunction, dry mouth, and dizziness. 

These drugs have similar drug interactions because they are part of the same drug category. Dextromethorphan (cough depressant), Triptans and other antidepressants like Prozac or Cymbalta, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI) should not be used together with Trintellix and Viibryd because they can increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. Aspirin or Ibuprofen (NSAIDs), and blood thinners like warfarin may also interact with these two medications.  

Alcohol should also be avoided when taking these two medications. 

Viibryd for anxiety 

Viibryd is not an approved treatment for a certain type of anxiety disorder called generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), but some research studies and trials showed that it is effective in treating the said disorder. So it can be used off-label to treat GAD.
