Singulair (montelukast)

Indications

Singulair is prescribed for:

  • Helping to prevent and treat asthma in individuals aged 12 months and older.
  • Preventing sudden airway narrowing during exercise in individuals aged 6 years and older.
  • Easing symptoms of nasal allergies:
  • For seasonal allergies such as hay fever, in individuals aged 2 years and older.
  • For year-round allergies, in individuals aged 6 months and older.

Dosage and Administration

  • Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before starting or refilling Singulair.
  • Take Singulair by mouth with or without food, as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Take Singulair at the same time each day. For asthma or asthma and allergies: take in the evening. For allergies only: take in the morning or evening.
  • Take your dose at least 2 hours before exercising if using it to prevent breathing problems during exercise.
  • Do not take more than one dose in 24 hours.
  • Do not take a dose before exercise if you are already taking this medication daily for asthma or allergies.
  • Do not adjust your dose or discontinue the medication without consulting your healthcare provider.

Mechanism of Action

Singulair works by blocking substances in the body called leukotrienes, which cause symptoms of asthma and allergic rhinitis. By preventing leukotrienes from causing inflammation, tightening of airways, and other symptoms, Singulair helps improve breathing and reduces allergy symptoms.
