Description

What is Januvia?

This medication is a brand-name medication that requires a doctor’s prescription. Its generic name is Sitagliptin.

This medication is used together with proper exercise and a healthy diet to reduce blood sugar levels in adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This drug is not recommended to treat patients who have type 1 diabetes mellitus.

How does Januvia work?

A tablet of Januvia contains Sitagliptin Phosphate which is an orally active, potent, and highly selective inhibitor of the dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) enzyme. This medication works by stopping the activity of a protein enzyme known as dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP-4) which decreases the amount of two incretin hormones, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). These incretin hormones are secreted by the intestine in response to food ingestion that stimulates insulin secretion.

If Januvia stops the activity of DPP-4, the number of incretin hormones (GLP-1 and GIP) is increased, leading to increased production and release of insulin by the body’s pancreas. High levels of insulin then reduce blood sugar levels.

Increased glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) causes the body to secrete less glucagon, a hormone responsible for increasing the amount of sugar in the blood. Therefore, reducing glucagon in the body means reducing blood sugar levels.

Overall, Januvia medication increases insulin production and reduces glucagon levels and glucose production in the liver.

Januvia dosage

This medicine is available in tablet form and comes in three various strengths: 25mg, 50mg, and 100 mg.

Januvia 100 mg orally once a day is the recommended dosage. You may put it on an empty or full stomach.

Renal function assessment is required before starting Januvia treatment because the dosage adjustment is based on the renal function of the patient.

Most prescription medications like Januvia can cause undesirable effects along with their needed effects. Some may gradually disappear as the body adjusts to the drug. Yet there are some that need medical attention immediately.
