Lipitor (atorvastatin)
Indications
Lipitor is indicated for:
- Reducing the risk of myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) but without clinically evident CHD.
- Lowering low-density lipoprotein (LDL-C) in adults with primary hyperlipidemia.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Lipitor by mouth as directed by your healthcare provider, usually once daily.
- Take it with or without food.
- Inform your healthcare provider about all other medications and supplements you are taking.
- Take Lipitor regularly at the same time each day.
- Follow your healthcare provider’s advice about diet and exercise to gain the full benefit of this medication.
- Do not consume grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Lipitor unless approved by your healthcare provider, as it can increase the risk of side effects.
- Do not skip doses or stop taking Lipitor without consulting your healthcare provider.
- Do not take Lipitor within 1 hour before or 4 hours after other cholesterol-lowering drugs to avoid interaction.
Mechanism of Action
Lipitor works by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme in the liver that plays a key role in producing cholesterol. By blocking this enzyme, Lipitor reduces the levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood, while increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol. This helps to prevent the buildup of cholesterol in the arteries, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke.
Contraindications
- Acute liver failure or decompensated cirrhosis.
- Hypersensitivity to Atorvastatin or any other ingredient in Lipitor.
