What is Estring(Estradiol Hemihydrate)? 

Estring or Estring ring is a flexible ring containing the active ingredient estradiol (an estrogen hormone) that needs to be inserted directly into the vagina to relieve moderate to severe vaginal and urinary symptoms due to menopause such as vaginal dryness, burning, itching, pain upon urination and urinary urgency and frequency. 

What Are Estring Side Effects? 

Like many other medications, Estring may cause some undesirable effects along with its needed effects. You do not need to report to your health care provider or need medical attention. They go away or become manageable once your body has adjusted to the medicine. Contact your doctor once they persist and become bothersome or worsen. 

The following are the common and less serious side effects of Estring: 


Nausea and vomiting 

Abdominal cramps and bloating 

Breast pain or tenderness 

Vaginal spotting or bleeding 

Increased vaginal discharge 

Fluid retention 

Contact your health care provider immediately if you experience any of the following serious adverse reactions: 

Symptoms of allergic reactions such as hives or itching, rash, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing. 

Breast lumps or discharge and other breast tissue changes 

Signs and symptoms of problems associated with blood clots (like stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis/DVT) such as chest pain, difficulty in breathing and cough (lung problems), sudden severe headache, sudden dizziness, or fainting, leg pain, swelling, redness, and leg that is warm to touch, pain at the chest/jaw/left arm, one-sided body weakness, trouble speaking or slurred speech, confusion, sudden changes in vision, and tingling or numbness of the arms or legs. 

Signs and symptoms of liver problems such as yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark-colored urine, persistent nausea and vomiting, upper right stomach pain, unusual weakness or tiredness, and loss of appetite. 

Vaginal itching, irritation, or unusual and odorous discharge are signs and symptoms of vaginal infection. 

Unusual vaginal bleeding like spotting and prolonged or recurrent bleeding. 

If any of the following side effects occur, remove Estring and contact your doctor at once. If you find it difficult or painful to remove the ring, stop and contact your doctor immediately. 

Fever, chills, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, faintness/lightheadedness, muscle pain, and a rash on the face and body appearing red or sunburn-like, which are signs and symptoms of toxic shock syndrome (TSS). This problem is caused by a bacterial infection that could happen rarely but seriously. 

Constipation, abdominal pain, and swelling, inability to pass gas or have a bowel movement are signs and symptoms of bowel obstruction/blockage. 

Signs and symptoms of vaginal erosion (wearing away) and ulceration (holes) such as vaginal redness, swelling, scrapes, vaginal pain or soreness, and vaginal bleeding.
