Hiprex (methenamine hippurate)

Indications

Hiprex is used for conditions like-

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Used to prevent and treat urinary tract infections by stopping the growth of bacteria in the urine.
  • Chronic UTIs: Helps in the long-term prevention of recurrent urinary tract infections.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Hiprex tablets with a full glass of water to help ensure proper absorption and effectiveness.
  • Swallow the tablets whole; do not crush, chew, or break them.
  • Adhere strictly to the prescribed dosage and timing as advised by your doctor.
  • Take the medication at the same times each day to maintain an even level in your bloodstream.
  • Maintain an acidic diet (e.g., cranberry juice, vitamin C supplements) to enhance the effectiveness of Hiprex.
  • Avoid missing doses; if you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next dose.
  • Do not take two doses at the same time to make up for a missed dose.
  • Do not take antacids containing sodium bicarbonate or other alkaline substances as they can reduce the effectiveness of Hiprex.

Mechanism of Action

Hiprex works by being converted to formaldehyde in acidic urine, which is toxic to bacteria. This action helps to prevent the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract, reducing the risk of infections.

  • Severe Liver Disease: Avoid using it if you suffer from significant liver dysfunction.
  • Dehydration: Not suitable for you if you suffer from severe dehydration or severe acid-base imbalance.
  • Allergy to Methenamine: Do not use it if you have a known allergy to Methenamine or any ingredients in the tablets.

  • Maintain Hydration: Ensure adequate fluid intake to help flush the urinary tract.
  • Regular Monitoring: Regularly visit your healthcare provider to monitor your response to the treatment and any potential side effects.
