Maxalt-MLT (rizatriptan benzoate)
Indications
You can use Maxalt-MLT to treat acute migraine attacks with or without aura. It helps to relieve headache pain, sensitivity to light and sound, and other migraine symptoms quickly, allowing you to return to your daily activities.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Maxalt-MLT as soon as you notice migraine symptoms for the best effect.
- Place the tablet on your tongue and allow it to dissolve completely before swallowing, with or without water.
- Follow your doctor’s instructions on the correct dosage, typically 5 mg or 10 mg, depending on your condition and response.
- If your migraine returns after relief, you can take a second dose at least 2 hours after the first. Do not exceed the maximum recommended dose of 30 mg in a 24-hour period.
- Inform your doctor about any other medications or supplements you are taking.
- Do not take Maxalt-MLT if you have used another migraine medication (such as another triptan or ergotamine) within the past 24 hours.
- Do not use Maxalt-MLT to prevent migraines; it is only for treating active migraine attacks.
- Avoid taking more than the prescribed dose to prevent severe side effects.
- Do not take Maxalt-MLT if you have phenylketonuria (PKU), as it contains phenylalanine.
Mechanism of Action
Maxalt-MLT works by stimulating serotonin (5-HT) receptors in the brain, leading to the constriction of blood vessels around the brain. This action reduces the inflammation and dilation of blood vessels that cause migraine pain and other symptoms, providing relief from acute migraine attacks.

- Do not use Maxalt-MLT if you are allergic to rizatriptan or any of its ingredients.
- Avoid using this medication if you have a history of heart disease, including angina, heart attack, or irregular heartbeats.
