Luvox (fluvoxamine maleate)

Indications

Luvox is used to treat the following conditions:

  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Helps reduce unwanted thoughts and repetitive behaviors.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD): Reduces fear, anxiety, and avoidance of social situations.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Luvox exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow tablets whole with water, with or without food.
  • Take your doses at the same time each day to maintain an even level of the medication in your body.
  • If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next dose.
  • Do not crush, chew, or split the tablets.
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose.
  • Do not abruptly stop taking Luvox without consulting your doctor, as it may cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Avoid alcohol while taking this medication, as it can increase side effects.

Mechanism of Action

Fluvoxamine Maleate is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). It works by increasing the levels of serotonin, a natural substance in the brain that helps maintain mental balance. This helps alleviate symptoms of OCD and social anxiety disorder by improving mood and reducing anxiety.

  • Concurrent Use with MAO Inhibitors: Avoid taking Luvox if you are using or have recently used monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
  • Severe Liver Disease: Not recommended for patients with severe liver impairment.
