Cytotec (misoprostol)

Cytotec is used to decrease the chance of stomach ulcers caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like aspirin.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Cytotec exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • Take it with food or milk to reduce the risk of stomach upset.
  • Do not take more or less than the prescribed dose.
  • Do not stop taking Cytotec without consulting your doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Cytotec works by protecting the lining of the stomach from the harmful effects of NSAIDs, reducing the risk of ulcers.

  • Do not take Cytotec if you are pregnant, as it can cause miscarriage.
  • Avoid Cytotec if you have a known allergy to Prostaglandins.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

  • Stomach cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

Serious side effects:

  • Heavy vaginal bleeding (especially if pregnant)
  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling)
  • Severe stomach pain

  • Hospital Use Only: Cytotec should only be used in hospitals for specific reasons like preparing the cervix for childbirth, inducing labor, or treating severe post-partum bleeding. These uses are not officially approved.
  • Heart Conditions: Be careful when giving Cytotec to patients with existing heart problems.
  • Pregnancy: If you are a pregnant woman, you should not take Cytotec to prevent NSAID-induced ulcers. It can cause miscarriage, early labor, or birth defects. If you get pregnant while taking Cytotec, stop immediately and talk to your doctor.
  • Allergies and Inactive Ingredients: Tell your doctor if you’re allergic to misoprostol or any other things. Cytotec might contain inactive ingredients that can cause allergic reactions or other issues.
  • Drug Interactions: Cytotec could interact with other drugs. Make sure your doctor knows about all the medications you’re taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter meds, vitamins, and herbs.
