Advair HFA (fluticasone propionate and salmeterol)

Indications

  • Advair HFA is used to treat asthma in patients aged 12 years and older.
  • It helps manage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
  • Advair HFA is prescribed to reduce the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.
  • It helps improve breathing by decreasing inflammation and relaxing the muscles around the airways.

Dosage and Administration

  • Use Advair HFA exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically two inhalations twice daily.
  • Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds before each spray.
  • Rinse your mouth with water without swallowing after each use to prevent oral infections.
  • Use other inhalers in the order directed by your doctor, waiting at least one minute between inhalations.
  • Keep track of the number of inhalations used and discard the inhaler after the labeled number of doses is reached.
  • Do not use Advair HFA to treat sudden breathing problems; use a rescue inhaler instead.
  • Avoid using Advair HFA more frequently than prescribed, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Do not stop using Advair HFA suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can worsen your condition.
  • Do not use the inhaler if the counter reads “0,” as it means the medication is finished.

Mechanism of Action

Advair HFA combines two medications: fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid, and salmeterol, a long-acting beta2-adrenergic agonist. Fluticasone propionate reduces inflammation in the airways, while salmeterol relaxes the muscles around the airways to improve breathing. This dual action helps prevent asthma attacks and manage COPD symptoms.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Advair HFA if you are allergic to fluticasone propionate, salmeterol, or any of its ingredients.
  • Avoid using Advair HFA if you are having an acute asthma or COPD attack.
  • Do not use Advair HFA if you have severe hypersensitivity to milk proteins.
  • Avoid Advair HFA if you have a known intolerance to lactose or galactose.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Throat irritation
  • Hoarseness
  • Cough
  • Nausea

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions, including rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing
  • Worsening breathing problems immediately after using the inhaler
  • High blood pressure
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Signs of infection, such as fever, chills, or persistent sore throat

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor about all other medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
  • Notify your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, thyroid problems, diabetes, or osteoporosis.
  • Report any signs of oral infections, such as white patches in your mouth, to your doctor.
  • Discuss the risks and benefits of using Advair HFA if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Use caution if you are switching from oral corticosteroids to Advair HFA, as it can affect your adrenal function.
  • If you miss a dose, skip it and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Advair HFA at room temperature, between 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F).
  • Keep the inhaler away from heat and direct sunlight.
  • Store Advair HFA out of reach of children and pets.
  • Do not puncture the canister or expose it to an open flame, even if it is empty.
  • Dispose of the inhaler properly when the counter reads “0” or it reaches the expiration date.
