Questran Powder (cholestyramine)

Indications

  • Hyperlipidemia Management: Used to lower cholesterol levels in the blood, particularly low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, in patients with hyperlipidemia.
  • Relief of Pruritus: Helps relieve itching associated with partial biliary obstruction and other liver diseases.

Dosage and Administration

  • Follow your doctor’s prescribed dosage and administration instructions strictly.
  • Mix the powder with water, juice, or other non-carbonated beverages as directed by your healthcare provider.
  • Stir the mixture well and drink immediately after mixing.
  • Take other medications at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after taking Questran to avoid interactions.
  • Maintain a diet low in cholesterol and saturated fats during treatment.
  • Do not take dry powder directly without mixing with liquid.
  • Avoid mixing with carbonated beverages, as they may cause foaming.
  • Do not take within 1 hour of taking other medications, especially certain antibiotics, thyroid hormones, or digitalis preparations.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose, as it may increase the risk of side effects.

Mechanism of Action

Cholestyramine binds bile acids in the intestine, preventing their reabsorption. This leads to increased excretion of bile acids and cholesterol in the feces, thereby reducing cholesterol levels in the blood.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you have a known allergy to cholestyramine or any component of Questran.
  • Avoid in patients with complete biliary obstruction.
  • Not suitable for individuals with severe constipation, phenylketonuria (due to aspartame content), or who cannot tolerate phenylalanine.

Side Effects

  • Signs of vitamin A, D, E, or K deficiency (easy bruising or bleeding, changes in vision)

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor about any other medications you are taking to avoid interactions, especially if you are taking blood thinners or certain medications for heart disease.
  • Disclose your complete medical history, especially of gastrointestinal disorders or vitamin deficiencies.
  • Monitor for signs of vitamin deficiencies during long-term use.
  • Maintain adequate fluid intake to prevent constipation while taking Questran.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before using Questran.
