Prinzide (lisinopril and hydrochlorothiazide)

Indications

Prinzide is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension). Lowering blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Prinzide exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Take the tablet at the same time each day, with or without food, to maintain an even level of the medication in your blood.
  • Drink plenty of fluids unless otherwise directed by your doctor, as dehydration can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly to ensure the medication is working effectively.
  • Do not stop taking Prinzide suddenly without consulting your doctor, as this can cause a sudden increase in blood pressure.
  • Avoid using salt substitutes or potassium supplements without your doctor’s advice, as Prinzide can increase potassium levels.
  • Do not take Prinzide if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, as it can harm an unborn baby.
  • Do not take it if you have a history of angioedema related to previous ACE inhibitor therapy.

Mechanism of Action

Prinzide combines an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and a thiazide diuretic. Lisinopril blocks the conversion of angiotensin I to angiotensin II, a potent vasoconstrictor, relaxing blood vessels and reducing blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide helps eliminate excess salt and water from the body, further lowering blood pressure and reducing fluid retention.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Prinzide if you have a history of angioedema related to previous ACE inhibitor treatment.
  • Avoid if you have severe kidney disease, are unable to urinate, or have an allergy to sulfa drugs.
  • Do not use it if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Not recommended for individuals with a known allergy to lisinopril, hydrochlorothiazide, or any of its ingredients.

Precautions
