Pataday (olopatadine)

Indications

It’s used to treat symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, such as redness, itching, and watering of the eyes.

Dosage and Administration

  • Use the eye drops exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly before using the drops.
  • Tilt your head back and pull down your lower eyelid to create a small pocket.
  • Hold the dropper above the eye and squeeze out a drop into the pocket.
  • Close your eyes for 1-2 minutes and gently press your finger to the inside corner of the eye to prevent the liquid from draining into your tear duct.
  • Wait at least 5-10 minutes, if using other eye medications, before applying them.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip on any surface, including your eye or hands, to avoid contamination.
  • Do not wear contact lenses if your eyes are red. Remove them before using the drops and wait at least 10 minutes before reinserting them.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dosage.
  • Do not use the drops if they change color or become cloudy.

Mechanism of Action

Pataday (Olopatadine) is an antihistamine that works by inhibiting the release of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. It also stabilizes mast cells, preventing them from releasing other substances that contribute to inflammation and allergy symptoms.

Contraindications

  • Allergic Reaction: Do not use the eye drops if you are allergic to Olopatadine or any other ingredients in the eye drops.
  • Eye Infection: Avoid using it if you have an eye infection, as it may worsen the condition.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild burning or stinging upon application
  • Dry eyes
  • Headache
  • Blurred vision

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe eye irritation or redness
  • Eye pain
  • Changes in vision
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (rash, itching, swelling)

Precautions

  • Monitor for Allergic Reactions: Watch for signs of an allergic reaction and contact your doctor if they occur.
  • Inform about Medical History: Tell your doctor if you have any other eye conditions or are using other eye medications.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid Contamination: Ensure the dropper does not touch any surfaces, including your eyes or hands, to prevent contamination and potential eye infections.
  • Driving and Operating Machinery: Be cautious about driving or operating machinery until you know how the eye drops affect you, as they may cause temporary blurred vision.

Storage Instructions

  • Keep the eye drops at a temperature between 36°F and 77°F (2°C to 25°C).
  • Store in the original container, away from light and moisture.
  • Ensure the medication is stored securely away from children and pets.
