Acular (ketorolac tromethamine)

Indications

  • Acular is used to relieve eye itching caused by seasonal allergies.
  • It is prescribed to reduce inflammation and pain following eye surgery.
  • Acular helps manage postoperative ocular inflammation after cataract surgery.
  • It is used to treat eye pain and burning/stinging following corneal refractive surgery.
  • Acular is indicated for short-term use to alleviate eye discomfort.

Dosage and Administration

  • Use Acular exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically one drop in the affected eye(s) four times daily.
  • Wash your hands before using the eye drops to prevent contamination.
  • Tilt your head back, pull down your lower eyelid, and apply the drop into the pocket created without touching the dropper tip to your eye or any surface.
  • Close your eyes gently and press your finger to the inside corner of your eye for about 1-2 minutes to prevent the solution from draining away.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the duration of therapy, usually not exceeding 2 weeks.
  • Do not touch the dropper tip on any surface, including your eye, to avoid contamination.
  • Avoid using Acular while wearing contact lenses unless your doctor advises otherwise. Wait at least 15 minutes before reinserting contact lenses.
  • Do not use more drops than prescribed, as this can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Avoid using Acular if the solution changes color or becomes cloudy.
  • Do not share Acular with others, even if they have similar symptoms.

Mechanism of Action

Acular works by inhibiting the action of cyclooxygenase (COX), an enzyme involved in the production of prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are substances in the body that cause inflammation and pain. By blocking this enzyme, Acular reduces the production of prostaglandins, thereby decreasing inflammation, pain, and discomfort in the eyes.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Acular if you are allergic to ketorolac tromethamine or any of its ingredients.
  • Avoid using Acular if you have a history of hypersensitivity to other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
  • Do not use Acular if you have a history of asthma, urticaria, or allergic-type reactions after taking aspirin or other NSAIDs.
  • Avoid using Acular if you have an active or suspected eye infection without consulting your doctor.
