Noroxin (norfloxacin)
Indications
- Noroxin is indicated for the treatment of urinary tract infections (UTIs), including cystitis and prostatitis.
- Used to treat certain types of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) such as gonorrhea.
- Effective in treating gastrointestinal infections caused by susceptible bacteria.
Dosage and Administration
- Take Noroxin exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually twice daily.
- Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass of water, at least one hour before or two hours after a meal.
- Maintain adequate hydration by drinking plenty of fluids while taking Noroxin.
- Complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better, to prevent the infection from returning.
- Do not take Noroxin with dairy products, antacids, or supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, iron, or zinc within two hours before or after taking the medication, as they can reduce its effectiveness.
- Avoid skipping doses or stopping the medication early without consulting your doctor.
- Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
Mechanism of Action
Noroxin contains norfloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the bacterial enzymes DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which are essential for bacterial DNA replication, transcription, repair, and recombination. This leads to the death of the susceptible bacteria, effectively treating the infection.
Contraindications
- Do not use Noroxin if you have a known allergy to norfloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics.
- Avoid using Noroxin if you have a history of tendinitis or tendon rupture associated with fluoroquinolone use.
- Not recommended for use in children, adolescents, or pregnant and breastfeeding women due to potential risks.
