Avelox (moxifloxacin)

Indications

  • Avelox is used to treat various types of bacterial infections.
  • It is effective against respiratory infections, including sinusitis, pneumonia, and bronchitis.
  • Avelox can also treat skin infections, intra-abdominal infections, and other bacterial infections as determined by your doctor.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Avelox exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually once daily.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food.
  • Complete the full course of treatment even if you start feeling better, to ensure all bacteria are eliminated.
  • Drink plenty of fluids while taking Avelox to stay hydrated.
  • Do not skip doses or stop taking Avelox without consulting your doctor, as it may lead to antibiotic resistance.
  • Do not take Avelox with dairy products or calcium-fortified juices, as they can reduce the effectiveness of the medication.
  • Do not take antacids, vitamin/mineral supplements, or sucralfate within 4 hours before or 8 hours after taking Avelox.

Mechanism of Action

Avelox contains moxifloxacin, a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It works by inhibiting the enzymes (DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV) that bacteria need to replicate and repair their DNA. This action ultimately kills the bacteria and treats the infection.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Avelox if you are allergic to moxifloxacin or other quinolone antibiotics.
  • Avoid using Avelox if you have a history of myasthenia gravis, as it can worsen muscle weakness.
  • Do not take Avelox if you have a history of tendon disorders related to quinolone use.
  • Avoid using Avelox if you have severe liver disease without consulting your doctor.
  • Do not use Avelox if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding without consulting your doctor.

Precautions

  • Notify your doctor if you experience any tendon pain, swelling, or inflammation, and avoid exercise until cleared by your doctor.
  • Use caution if you are elderly, as you may be more sensitive to the effects of the medication, particularly tendon problems and QT prolongation.
  • Be aware of signs of peripheral neuropathy, such as pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness, and report them to your doctor immediately.
