Nexgard (afoxolaner)

Indications

  • Nexgard is prescribed to dogs to kill adult fleas and prevent flea infestations. It begins killing fleas within 30 minutes and provides protection for a full month.
  • Nexgard is effective against various tick species, including black-legged ticks, American dog ticks, Lone Star ticks, and brown dog ticks. It helps to reduce the risk of diseases transmitted by these ticks.

Dosage and Administration

  • Give Nexgard exactly as directed by your veterinarian, typically once a month.
  • Administered the medication with or without food, based on your dog’s preference or your veterinarian’s advice.
  • Make sure your dog chews the tablet completely before swallowing to ensure proper dosage delivery.
  • Use the appropriate dosage based on your dog’s weight to ensure effectiveness and safety.
  • Do not skip doses.
  • Avoid using in cats as Nexgard is specifically formulated for dogs and should not be given to cats.
  • Do not administer Nexgard to puppies less than 8 weeks of age or weighing less than 4 pounds.

Mechanism of Action

Nexgard (Afoxolaner) is an oral insecticide and acaricide that works by inhibiting the nervous system of fleas and ticks. Afoxolaner blocks ligand-gated chloride channels, particularly those gated by the neurotransmitter GABA, resulting in uncontrolled neuromuscular activity and death of the parasites. This mechanism provides effective control and prevention of flea and tick infestations.
