Micardis (telmisartan)

Indications

  • Micardis is prescribed to lower high blood pressure, helping to prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems.
  • It is used to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, or death from cardiovascular causes in patients 55 years or older who are at high risk for such events and are unable to take ACE inhibitors.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Micardis exactly as directed by your healthcare provider, typically once daily.
  • Take the medication with or without food based on your preference.
  • Swallow the tablets whole.
  • Take Micardis at the same time each day to maintain steady levels of the medication in your body.
  • Do not crush, chew, or split the tablets to ensure proper dosage delivery.
  • Do Not Adjust Your Dose Without Consulting Your Doctor:
  • Avoid missing doses.
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

Mechanism of Action

Micardis (Telmisartan) is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB). It works by blocking the action of angiotensin II, a substance in the body that causes blood vessels to tighten. As a result, telmisartan relaxes blood vessels, which lowers blood pressure and improves blood flow.

Contraindications

  • Known Hypersensitivity to Telmisartan: Do not take Micardis if you have a known allergy to Telmisartan or any of its components.
  • Pregnancy: Micardis can cause injury or death to the unborn baby when used during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy.
  • Severe Liver or Kidney Disease: Avoid using Micardis if you have severe liver or kidney impairment.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Upper respiratory tract infections
  • Back pain

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, itching/swelling, severe dizziness, difficulty breathing)
  • High potassium levels (muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat)
  • Kidney problems (change in the amount of urine)
  • Severe hypotension (very low blood pressure)

Precautions

  • Inform About All Medications: Provide your doctor with a complete list of your current medications to avoid harmful interactions.
  • Monitor Blood Pressure Regularly: Regular monitoring of blood pressure is necessary to ensure the medication is working effectively.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, which can increase the risk of low blood pressure.

Storage Instructions

  • Keep Micardis tablets at 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Store in the original container to protect from moisture and light.
