Effient (prasugrel)

Effient is prescribed for the following conditions:

  • Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS): Helps prevent blood clots in people who have had a recent heart attack or severe chest pain (unstable angina).
  • Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI): Used to reduce the risk of blood clots forming in the heart’s arteries after procedures like angioplasty and stent placement.

Dosage and Administration

  • Follow your doctor’s prescription precisely. Effient is usually taken once daily, with or without food.
  • Swallow the tablet whole.
  • Take Effient at the same time every day to maintain an even level of medication in your blood.
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
  • Do not skip doses. Missing doses can increase your risk of a heart attack or stroke.
  • Do not stop taking Effient without consulting your doctor, as this can increase your risk of heart complications.
  • Do not take Effient with other blood thinners unless advised by your doctor, as this can increase the risk of bleeding.

Mechanism of Action

Effient is an antiplatelet medication. It works by preventing platelets (a type of blood cell) from clumping together to form clots. This action helps to keep blood flowing smoothly in your arteries and reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other heart-related complications.

Effient should not be used if you:

  • Have Active Bleeding: Such as peptic ulcer or brain hemorrhage.
  • Have a History of Stroke or TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack): Effient can increase the risk of bleeding in these conditions.
  • Are Allergic to Prasugrel: Any known hypersensitivity to Prasugrel or any component of Effient.
  • Are About to Undergo Surgery: Including dental procedures, as Effient increases bleeding risk. Your doctor may advise you to stop Effient temporarily.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe Bleeding
  • Allergic Reactions like rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing.
  • Blood in Urine or Stools
  • Unusual Bruising

  • Monitor Bleeding: Watch for signs of unusual bleeding or bruising and report them to your doctor immediately.
  • Medical History: Inform your doctor about your complete medical history, especially if you have liver problems, a history of stroke, or stomach ulcers.
  • Other Medications: Inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements.
  • Avoid Injury: Be cautious to avoid activities that could cause injury or bleeding.

Storage Instructions

  • Keep Effient at a temperature between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Store in a dry place; avoid bathrooms and kitchens where humidity is high.
  • Keep the tablets in their original container, tightly closed, to protect them from light and moisture.
