DDAVP (desmopressin acetate)

  • Central Diabetes Insipidus:
    • Used as antidiuretic replacement therapy for central diabetes insipidus.
    • Helps manage temporary excessive urination and thirst after head trauma or pituitary region surgery.
  • Primary Nocturnal Enuresis:
    • Management of bedwetting in children (primary nocturnal enuresis).
    • Can be used alone or with behavioral conditioning or other non-drug therapies.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take DDAVP tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with water.
  • Follow the dosage instructions provided by your healthcare provider.
  • Monitor urine volume and osmolality for response to treatment.
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the tablet.
  • Do not exceed the recommended dose without consulting your doctor.
  • Avoid using DDAVP if you have known hypersensitivity to desmopressin acetate or any of its components.
  • Do not use DDAVP if you have moderate to severe renal impairment or a history of hyponatremia.

Mechanism of Action

DDAVP works by reducing urine production and increasing water reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to decreased urination. It mimics the action of vasopressin, a hormone involved in regulating water balance in the body.

Contraindications

  • Avoid DDAVP if you have known hypersensitivity to Desmopressin Acetate or its components.
  • Not recommended for patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or a history of hyponatremia.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain

  • Throat irritation (for intranasal formulations)

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (rare)
  • Anaphylaxis (rare, with intravenous and intranasal administration)
  • Slight elevation of blood pressure (for intranasal formulations and injection)

Precautions

  • Use DDAVP cautiously if you have coronary artery disease or hypertension, as it may cause a slight increase in blood pressure.
  • If you have conditions like cystic fibrosis, heart failure, or renal disorders, you should be monitored closely for fluid and electrolyte imbalance.
  • Rare severe allergic reactions have been reported with DDAVP. Anaphylaxis is rare but possible with intravenous and intranasal administration, not with DDAVP tablets.
