Combivent Inhaler (ipratropium bromide and albuterol)
Indications
- Combivent Inhaler aerosol is indicated for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in patients who require a second bronchodilator.
- It helps to relieve bronchospasm and improve breathing in individuals with COPD, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.
Dosage and Administration
- Use Combivent Inhaler exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically two inhalations four times daily.
- Prime the inhaler before the first use by spraying it into the air away from your face until a fine mist is visible.
- Shake the inhaler well before each use.
- Breathe out fully before inhaling the medication, place the mouthpiece in your mouth, and inhale deeply while pressing down on the canister.
- Hold your breath for as long as you are comfortable after inhaling the medication to allow it to reach your lungs.
- Clean the mouthpiece at least once a week to prevent blockage and ensure proper medication delivery.
- Do not exceed the prescribed dose of Combivent Inhaler or use it more frequently than directed by your doctor.
- Avoid spraying the medication into your eyes as it can cause irritation or other side effects.
- Do not stop using Combivent Inhaler abruptly without consulting your doctor, even if you feel better, as it may worsen your condition.
Mechanism of Action
Combivent contains Ipratropium Bromide and Albuterol, which are bronchodilators. Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic that helps to relax and open the airways in the lungs. Albuterol is a beta-agonist that also relaxes and widens the airways, making it easier to breathe.
Contraindications
- Do not use Combivent Inhaler if you have a known allergy to ipratropium, albuterol, or any other ingredients in the inhaler.
- Avoid Combivent Inhaler if you have a history of hypersensitivity to atropine or other related drugs.
- Consult your doctor before using Combivent if you have heart condition, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, or thyroid disorders.
