Cogentin (benztropine mesylate)

Cogentin is used to treat:

  • All types of Parkinson’s disease.
  • Movement problems caused by certain medications (but not tardive dyskinesia).

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Cogentin exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
  • Take it 1 to 2 times a day, either in the morning or at bedtime.
  • Take it with or without food.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dry mouth and constipation.
  • Consult your doctor if you need dosage adjustments based on your response and side effects.
  • Do not skip doses or change your dosage without consulting your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid drinking alcohol as it can increase drowsiness and dizziness.
  • Do not drive or operate heavy machinery until you know how Cogentin affects you, as it can cause drowsiness or blurred vision.
  • Avoid taking other medications without consulting your healthcare provider, especially those affecting the nervous system.

Mechanism of Action

Cogentin works by blocking acetylcholine receptors in the brain, which helps to restore the balance of acetylcholine and dopamine. This action helps reduce the symptoms of Parkinsonism and certain drug-induced movement disorders.

Cogentin is contraindicated in:

  • Patients who are hypersensitive to benztropine mesylate or any ingredient in the formulation.
  • Children under 3 years of age.
  • Patients with narrow-angle glaucoma.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Dry mouth
  • Blurred vision
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Nervousness
  • Constipation

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., hives, difficulty breathing)
  • Severe drowsiness or confusion
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Severe constipation
  • Tachycardia (fast heartbeat)

  • Cumulative Action: Since Cogentin can accumulate in the body, continuous supervision by your healthcare provider is recommended.
  • Side Effect Management: If you experience dry mouth, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, or nervousness, consult your doctor. Adjusting the dosage or timing may help.
  • Dry Mouth: If severe, causing difficulty swallowing or speaking, or if it leads to loss of appetite and weight, reduce the dosage or stop temporarily.
  • Vomiting: Can be managed by temporarily stopping the medication and resuming at a lower dosage.
  • Heat Exposure: Avoid overheating as Cogentin can reduce sweating, increasing the risk of heatstroke.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Cogentin at room temperature, between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F).
  • Keep the medication in its original container, tightly closed, and away from moisture and heat.
