Cardene (nicardipine)

Indications

  • Cardene capsules and tablets are indicated for the treatment of hypertension (high blood pressure) to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attacks and strokes.
  • It is also used for the management of angina (chest pain) and certain types of irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias).

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Cardene capsules or tablets exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually two to three times daily.
  • Swallow the capsules or tablets whole with a full glass of water.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions regarding the appropriate dosage and frequency of Cardene use.
  • Monitor your blood pressure regularly to ensure the medication is working effectively.
  • Do not exceed the prescribed dose of Cardene or take it more frequently than directed by your doctor.
  • Do not crush, chew, or break them.
  • Avoid consuming grapefruit or grapefruit juice while taking Cardene, as it can increase the medication’s levels in your blood.
  • Do not stop taking Cardene abruptly without consulting your doctor, as it may worsen your condition.

Mechanism of Action

Cardene contains Nicardipine, a calcium channel blocker. It works by relaxing the muscles of your blood vessels, which helps to lower blood pressure, improve blood flow, and reduce the workload on the heart.

  • Avoid Cardene if you have severe hypotension (low blood pressure) or certain types of heart block (without a pacemaker).

  • Be cautious when driving or operating machinery until you know how Cardene affects you, as it may cause dizziness or drowsiness.
  • Monitor for signs of heart failure, such as swelling of the ankles or feet and shortness of breath and report these symptoms to your doctor.
