Asmanex HFA Medication Guide

What are the main uses of Asmanex HFA, and how does it help in each case?

Asmanex HFA (mometasone furoate) is indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma in people 12 years and older. It helps prevent and control asthma symptoms. It is not used to treat sudden, severe asthma symptoms. It should not be used as a rescue inhaler. Its safety and effectiveness in children under 12 years are not known.

What are the active and inactive ingredients in Asmanex HFA?

Asmanex HFA contains mometasone furoate as the active ingredient. The inactive ingredients include hydrofluoroalkane (HFA-227: 1,1,1,2,3,3,3-heptafluoropropane), ethanol, and oleic acid.

What are the instructions for taking Asmanex HFA?

Follow your doctor’s prescription exactly.

Do not use it more often than directed. You must use it regularly. It may take one week or longer for your asthma symptoms to improve. Do not stop using it unless your doctor tells you to. Your doctor will adjust your medicines if needed.

The inhaler comes in two strengths. Use the one prescribed for you. Pay attention to the differences between Asmanex HFA and your other inhalers. Take two puffs in the morning and two in the evening.

If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the regular time. Do not take extra puffs. If you take more than prescribed, call your doctor immediately.

The inhaler does not relieve sudden asthma symptoms. Always carry a rescue inhaler for emergencies. Use it if you have breathing problems between doses. If you do not have one, ask your doctor.

Do not use the inhaler canister or actuator with other inhalers. Do not use other medicine canisters or actuators with Asmanex HFA.

Rinse your mouth with water after each dose to prevent yeast infections. Do not spray Asmanex HFA in your eyes. If it gets into your eyes, rinse them with water. If irritation continues, call your doctor.

Call your doctor or get medical help if your breathing worsens, you need your rescue inhaler more often, or your inhaler does not work well. Seek help if you use four or more puffs of your rescue inhaler for two or more days in a row or finish a whole canister in eight weeks.

Contact your doctor if your peak flow meter results drop. If your asthma does not improve after using Asmanex HFA for one to two weeks, inform your doctor.

The inhaler has two main parts: the metal canister holding the medicine and the plastic actuator that sprays it. The inhaler also has a cap covering the mouthpiece. The inhaler contains 120 puffs and comes with a dose counter on the actuator. The counter shows how many puffs remain.

When you use Asmanex HFA for the first time, the counter will show 124 puffs. Each time you press the canister, one puff is released, and the counter decreases by one. The counter stops at zero. Do not remove the canister from the actuator, as it may cause a dose to discharge. Use only the supplied actuator.

Before using Asmanex HFA, remove the cap from the mouthpiece. Check for objects inside. Ensure the canister is fully inserted. If using it for the first time, prime the inhaler.

Hold it upright, away from your face, and press down firmly on the canister until it stops. Do this four times to release four puffs into the air. Shake the inhaler before each priming puff. After priming, the counter should read 120. If you do not use Asmanex HFA for more than five days, prime it again before use.

To use Asmanex HFA, remove the cap and check the mouthpiece. Shake the inhaler well. Breathe out fully through your mouth. Hold the inhaler upright and place the mouthpiece in your mouth. Close your lips around it. Breathe in slowly and deeply while pressing down on the canister.

Stop pressing when it stops moving. Hold your breath for up to ten seconds, then remove the inhaler and breathe out through your nose. Wait at least 30 seconds before taking the second puff. Shake the inhaler again and repeat the steps.

After using Asmanex HFA, replace the cap immediately. Rinse your mouth with water after taking two puffs. The dose counter helps track inhalations left. The counter decreases with each puff. When the counter reaches 20, refill your prescription. Throw away Asmanex HFA when the counter reaches zero, even if the inhaler still sprays.

Never try to change or remove the counter. Do not use Asmanex HFA after its expiration date.

Clean the mouthpiece every seven days with a dry wipe. Remove the cap and wipe the inside and outside of the mouthpiece with a clean, dry tissue or cloth. Do not use water or sharp objects to clean it. Replace the cap after cleaning.

When should Asmanex HFA not be used?

Do not use Asmanex HFA to treat sudden, severe asthma symptoms. Do not use it if you are allergic to mometasone furoate or any of its ingredients.
