What is Glyxambi used for?

Glyxambi is a brand-name medication that can only be obtained with a doctor’s prescription. It is used along with proper diet and adequate exercise for treating adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

It is also used in adults who have type2 diabetes and heart disease to lower the risk of death from stroke, heart failure, or heart attack.

Glyxambi drug class

Glyxambi is classified as an antidiabetic combination that contains two medicines for diabetes, empagliflozin (Jardiance) and linagliptin (Tradjenta).

Empagliflozin (Jardiance) is a sodium-glucose co-transporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that works by blocking the action of SGLT2, which is responsible for the reabsorption of glucose from the kidneys back into circulation. Blocking SGLT2 by empagliflozin reduces the reabsorption of glucose in the kidneys and removes excess glucose into the urine, thus reducing glucose levels in the blood.

Linagliptin (Tradjenta) is a dipeptidyl-peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitor that blocks the breakdown of incretin, hormones released after consuming food and stimulates the pancreas to produce insulin when blood glucose levels are high. Linagliptin also stimulates the liver to make less glucose.

Glyxambi dosage

Glyxambi (empagliflozin and linagliptin) comes in tablet form and is available in two different strengths:

Glyxambi 10 mg (empagliflozin)/5 mg (linagliptin)

Glyxambi 25 mg (empagliflozin)/5 mg (linagliptin)

For adults with type 2 diabetes, the recommended dose of Glyxambi is 10 mg (empagliflozin)/5 mg (linagliptin) once a day in the morning. For patients who can tolerate this medication, the dose may be increased to 25 mg (empagliflozin)/5 mg (linagliptin) once a day for additional blood sugar control.

Glyxambi is not recommended for use in patients who have an EGFR below 30 mL/min/1.73 m2.

Before starting Glyxambi treatment, renal function should be assessed as clinically indicated.

For patients who have volume depletion, correcting it is a must before starting Glyxambi treatment.
