Rocaltrol (calcitriol)

Indications

  • Rocaltrol is used to manage low calcium levels in patients with chronic kidney disease who are undergoing dialysis.
  • It is also prescribed to treat hypocalcemia (low calcium levels) in patients with hypoparathyroidism, including post-surgical and idiopathic hypoparathyroidism.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Rocaltrol exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water.
  • Take the medication with or without food, but maintain a consistent schedule for better results.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions on the dosage and schedule, typically taken once a day.
  • Do not crush, chew, or break the capsules.
  • Avoid taking calcium supplements or antacids containing calcium without consulting your doctor, as this may increase the risk of hypercalcemia.
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose to prevent potential side effects or overdose.
  • Avoid consuming excessive amounts of vitamin D or other supplements that contain vitamin D.
  • Do not stop taking Rocaltrol without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.

Mechanism of Action

Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) is the active form of vitamin D3. It works by promoting the absorption of calcium from the intestines and the reabsorption of calcium in the kidneys. Additionally, it regulates the levels of calcium and phosphate in the blood and helps maintain proper bone structure and function.

Contraindications

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Calcitriol or any ingredients in Rocaltrol.
  • Avoid use if you have hypercalcemia (high levels of calcium in the blood) or vitamin D toxicity.
  • Not recommended for individuals with severe renal impairment without careful monitoring.
  • Consult your doctor if you have a history of heart disease, kidney disease, or electrolyte imbalances before taking this medication.

Precautions

  • Regularly monitor blood calcium and phosphate levels as recommended by your healthcare provider.
