Retrovir (zidovudine)

Indications

Retrovir is used in combination with other antiretroviral medications to treat HIV infection. It helps to reduce HIV viral load, maintain immune function, and delay the progression of HIV-related illnesses.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Retrovir exactly as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Swallow the capsules whole with a full glass of water.
  • Take the medication with or without food.
  • Follow your doctor’s instructions on the dosage and schedule, typically taken every 4 to 6 hours.
  • Do not crush or chew the capsules, as this can affect the drug’s effectiveness.
  • Avoid skipping doses.
  • Do not take more than the prescribed dose to prevent potential side effects or drug toxicity.
  • Do not stop taking Retrovir without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.

Mechanism of Action

Retrovir (Zidovudine) belongs to a class of medications called nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs). It works by inhibiting the action of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme HIV needs to replicate. By blocking HIV replication, Retrovir reduces the viral load in the body and helps to slow down the progression of HIV infection.

Contraindications

  • Do not use it if you are allergic to Zidovudine or any of the ingredients in Retrovir.
  • Avoid if you have severe liver disease or bone marrow suppression.
  • Not recommended for use in individuals with a history of lactic acidosis or hepatomegaly with steatosis.
  • Consult your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease or myopathy before taking this medication.
  • Inform your healthcare provider if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
