Nizoral (ketoconazole)

Indications

  • Nizoral cream is indicated for the treatment of fungal skin infections such as athlete’s foot, jock itch, ringworm, and seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Used to treat pityriasis (tinea versicolor), a fungal infection that causes lightening or darkening of the skin on the neck, chest, arms, or legs.

Dosage and Administration

  • Apply Nizoral cream exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically once or twice daily.
  • Clean and dry the affected area thoroughly before applying the cream.
  • Use a small amount of cream and apply it in a thin layer over the affected area and the surrounding skin.
  • Wash your hands after applying the cream, unless the treatment area includes the hands.
  • Continue using Nizoral cream for the full prescribed length of time, even if symptoms improve, to prevent the recurrence of the infection.
  • Consult your doctor if there is no improvement after 4 weeks of treatment.
  • Do not apply Nizoral cream to broken or damaged skin, unless directed by your doctor.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth, and mucous membranes. If the cream gets into these areas, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not cover the treated area with bandages or dressings unless instructed by your doctor.
  • Avoid using other topical medications, lotions, or creams in the treated area without consulting your doctor.

Mechanism of Action

Nizoral cream contains ketoconazole, an antifungal agent that works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a key component of fungal cell membranes. This disruption weakens the fungal cell membrane, leading to cell death and resolving the infection.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Nizoral cream if you have a known allergy to ketoconazole or any other ingredients in the cream.
  • Avoid using Nizoral cream on areas of the skin that are severely irritated or inflamed without consulting your doctor.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Mild skin irritation
  • Itching
  • Redness
  • Burning sensation at the application site

Serious Side Effects

  • Severe skin reactions (rash, hives, blistering, or peeling)
  • Signs of an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat)

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor about any existing medical conditions or medications you are taking before using Nizoral cream.
  • Be cautious if you have a history of skin allergies or sensitivities.
  • Regularly monitor the treated area for signs of worsening conditions or severe irritation.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, discuss the risks and benefits of Nizoral cream with your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid prolonged use of Nizoral cream, as it may lead to skin sensitization or resistance.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Nizoral cream at room temperature (15°C to 30°C) in a dry place, away from moisture and heat.
  • Keep the tube tightly closed when not in use.
  • Do not use Nizoral cream if it has changed color, or texture, or shows any signs of deterioration.
  • Dispose of any unused or expired cream properly, following local regulations or guidelines.
  • Keep Nizoral cream out of reach of children and pets.
