Boniva (ibandronate sodium)

Indications

  • Use Boniva to treat and prevent osteoporosis in postmenopausal women. It helps reduce the risk of fractures, particularly in the spine.
  • You can use it to increase bone mass in individuals with osteoporosis.

Dosage and Administration

  • Take Boniva exactly as prescribed by your doctor, typically once a month.
  • Take the tablet first thing in the morning, on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before any food, drink, or other medications.
  • Swallow the tablet whole with a full glass (6-8 ounces) of plain water.
  • Remain upright (sitting or standing) for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva to help prevent irritation of your esophagus.
  • Do not lie down or recline for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva to avoid esophageal irritation.
  • Avoid eating, drinking (except plain water), or taking any other medications for at least 60 minutes after taking Boniva.
  • Do not crush, chew, or suck on the tablet, as this can cause mouth or throat irritation.
  • Do not take Boniva if you have low blood calcium levels (hypocalcemia).

Mechanism of Action

Boniva is a bisphosphonate that works by inhibiting osteoclast-mediated bone resorption. It binds to bone minerals and prevents the breakdown of bone, thereby increasing bone density and reducing the risk of fractures.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Boniva if you are allergic to ibandronate or any other ingredients in the medication.
  • Avoid taking Boniva if you have esophageal abnormalities that delay esophageal emptying, such as stricture or achalasia.
  • Do not use it if you are unable to stand or sit upright for at least 60 minutes.
  • Avoid taking Boniva if you have severe renal impairment or kidney failure.

Precautions

  • Inform your doctor if you have a history of kidney disease, low blood calcium levels, or digestive problems before taking Boniva.
  • Ensure you have adequate calcium and vitamin D intake while on Boniva to support bone health.
