Benzaclin (clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide)

Indications

  • Benzaclin gel is indicated for the topical treatment of acne vulgaris.
  • It is used to reduce the number of acne lesions, control inflammation, and prevent the formation of new acne lesions.

Dosage and Administration

  • Wash your hands before and after applying Benzaclin gel.
  • Cleanse the affected area with a mild cleanser and pat dry before applying the gel.
  • Apply a thin layer of gel to the affected skin areas once daily, preferably in the evening.
  • Gently massage the gel into the skin until it is evenly distributed.
  • Use Benzaclin regularly to achieve the best results.
  • Do not apply Benzaclin gel to broken, sunburned, or irritated skin.
  • Avoid contact with eyes, mouth, nose, or mucous membranes. If contact occurs, rinse thoroughly with water.
  • Do not use more gel than prescribed by your healthcare provider, as excessive use may increase the risk of side effects.

Mechanism of Action

Benzaclin gel combines two active ingredients: clindamycin, an antibiotic, and benzoyl peroxide, an antimicrobial agent. Clindamycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis, while benzoyl peroxide exerts its antibacterial effects by releasing free radicals and reducing sebum production. Together, they work to eliminate acne-causing bacteria and reduce inflammation.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Benzaclin gel if you are allergic to clindamycin, benzoyl peroxide, or any other components of the gel.
  • Avoid using Benzaclin gel in patients with a history of regional enteritis, ulcerative colitis, or antibiotic-associated colitis.
  • Consult your healthcare provider before using Benzaclin gel during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects

  • Skin dryness or peeling
  • Itching or burning sensation
  • Skin redness or irritation
  • Oiliness of the skin
  • Worsening of acne initially

Serious Side Effects

  • Allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Severe skin irritation or blistering
  • Diarrhea or abdominal pain (if accidentally ingested)

Precautions

  • Inform your healthcare provider about any existing skin conditions or allergies before using Benzaclin gel.
  • Use sunscreen and protective clothing to minimize sun exposure, as benzoyl peroxide may increase skin sensitivity to sunlight.
  • Avoid prolonged use of Benzaclin gel, as it may lead to antibiotic resistance or decreased effectiveness.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Benzaclin gel at room temperature (20°C to 25°C) in its original container, tightly closed.
  • Avoid exposure to excessive heat or moisture.
