Aclovate Cream (alclometasone)

Indications

  • Aclovate Cream is used for:
  • Treating Inflammatory Skin Conditions: It helps reduce inflammation, redness, and itching caused by a variety of skin conditions, including eczema, dermatitis, and allergic reactions.
  • Relieving Symptoms of Psoriasis: Used to manage mild to moderate plaque psoriasis by reducing scales, redness, and discomfort.
  • Ingredients
  • Active Ingredient: Alclometasone Dipropionate.
  • Inactive Ingredients: White petrolatum, mineral oil, isopropyl myristate, propylene glycol, monostearate, cetyl alcohol, sorbitan monostearate, purified water.

Dosage and Administration

  • Apply a thin layer of Aclovate Cream to the affected area(s) of the skin as directed by your healthcare provider, usually 2 to 3 times daily.
  • Gently rub the cream into the skin until it is evenly distributed.
  • Wash your hands before and after applying the cream unless the treatment is for your hands.
  • Use the cream consistently as prescribed to achieve the best results, but only for the prescribed duration.
  • Do not apply Aclovate Cream on the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed by your doctor, as these areas are more sensitive.
  • Avoid covering the treated area with a bandage or dressing unless your doctor advises you to do so, as this can increase the absorption of the medication.
  • Do not use the cream on broken or infected skin unless instructed by your healthcare provider.
  • Avoid prolonged use of Aclovate Cream on large areas of the body or using it in higher amounts than prescribed, as this can increase the risk of side effects.

Mechanism of Action

Aclovate Cream contains alclometasone dipropionate, a low to medium potency corticosteroid. It works by inhibiting the release of substances in the body that cause inflammation, thereby reducing redness, swelling, and itching associated with various skin conditions.

Contraindications

  • Do not use Aclovate Cream if you are allergic to alclometasone or any other corticosteroids.
  • Avoid using this cream if you have untreated skin infections or certain skin conditions such as rosacea or perioral dermatitis, unless advised by your healthcare provider.
  • Do not use on the eyes or eyelids, as this can cause serious eye conditions like glaucoma or cataracts.

Side Effects

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild burning, stinging, or itching at the application site
  • Dryness or cracking of the skin
  • Acne or folliculitis (inflammation of hair follicles)
  • Skin thinning or discoloration with long-term use

Serious Side Effects:

  • Severe skin irritation or worsening of your condition
  • Stretch marks or easy bruising
  • Signs of a skin infection (redness, warmth, pus)
  • Unusual tiredness or weight loss (potential signs of systemic absorption)
  • Vision problems (blurry vision, seeing halos around lights)

Precautions

  • Inform your healthcare provider about any existing medical conditions, especially if you have diabetes, immune system disorders, or are using other corticosteroid medications.
  • Use with caution in pediatric patients, as children may absorb more of the medication through the skin, increasing the risk of side effects.
  • Be cautious when applying the cream on areas where the skin folds, such as the knees or elbows, to avoid excessive absorption.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, as the risks and benefits need to be evaluated.

Storage Instructions

  • Store Aclovate Cream at room temperature, between 68°F to 77°F (20°C to 25°C).
  • Keep the tube tightly closed and away from moisture and heat.
  • Do not freeze the cream.
