What is Multaq?

Multaq (dronedarone) is prescribed in people who have a history of paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation but are now in good condition. Multaq belongs to the class III of antiarrhythmic drugs that helps keep a normal heartbeat rhythm to lower the chance of getting to the hospital for having atrial fibrillation again.

Dronedarone works directly to the heart’s tissues to slow down the nerve impulses to keep the heart rhythm on a regular phase. It specifically blocks the potassium channels (which play a big part in electrical activities in the heart) to slow down the electrical activity in the heart to help keep rhythm stays normal and prevent it from turning to atrial fibrillation again.

Multaq Dosing

Multaq 400 mg is prescribed to be taken twice a day with a meal, once in the morning and once in the evening. It is best to take it regularly daily at the same time of the day to help attain benefits. A missed dose can still be taken if it is not yet near the following intake schedule; if it is, skip the missed dose and take the following amount on a regular schedule. Do not take two tablets to catch up for the missed dose. Do not change or stop taking Multaq without your doctor’s advice. Grapefruit or drinking grapefruit juice should be avoided while taking Multaq. It can increase the risks of side effects and increase the levels of dronedarone in the body.

Multaq Side Effects

Take note that the side effects of Multaq listed here are not the complete list.

Get medical attention right away if an irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, or a severe allergic reaction with a rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, and trouble breathing occurs.

Most patients taking Multaq do not have serious side effects; however, inform the healthcare professional assisting you if any of the lists below is experienced:

  • Indication of liver disease (persistent nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellowing eyes or skin, or dark urine)
  • Signs of lung problems (persistent dry cough or shortness of breath)
  • Symptoms of kidney problems (change in the urine amount)
  • Change or loss of taste
  • Unusual tiredness
  • Increased sensitivity to sunlight
  • Common side effects include nausea and diarrhea; if they persist or worsen, call your doctor and ask for medical advice.

Multaq precautions

Before taking Multaq, talk to your doctor and disclose your medical history, particularly liver disease and irregular heartbeats. Dronedarone can double the risk of death, stroke, and being taken to the hospital for heart failure if taken with a condition of severe heart failure, if you are recently hospitalized for worsening symptoms of heart failure or if you have permanent atrial fibrillation.

Pregnant women should not take Multaq, for it can cause congenital disabilities; the use of effective birth control is recommended.

Blood and urine tests must be regularly checked while taking this medication to monitor if it is working correctly and avoid unwanted side effects.

Consult your doctor if you take other medicines, supplements, or herbal products to avoid drug interactions.
