Just the facts: Generic
Drug Prices
Our goal is simple: We want to save you money on your prescription
medications. We have found that shopping in Canada for your prescriptions
is not always least expensive option. (yes, that's correct!).
Prescription Point offers our customers the option of ordering
their medications where they are least expensive. It
was only natural that we should also offer United States generic
drugs along side Canadian generic drugs. With increased competition,
you save more!
Recent studies have shown that out of the five most prescribed
generic drugs, all five are less expensive in the US than Canada.
They are:
A study in August 2002 by Palmer D'Angelo found that many US
generic drugs are less expensive than their Canadian counterparts.
The Patented Medicine Prices Review Board of Health Canada only
sets "factory-gate" prices for patented medications
drugs. Prices of Canadian generic drugs are not regulated -- similar
to US generic drugs.
In the United States, many generic drugs are less expensive because
of competition in the U.S. for market share and by the number
of generic drug manufacturers. All this means lower prices (typically)
in the United States on generic drugs.
With Prescription Point, we always show you the lowest prices
- whether you order from our US pharmacy, from Canada or both!

Competition lowers US generic
drug prices
Many popular generic drugs are more expensive in Canada than
in the United States. Some of the reasons for this are:
- The United States fills 3.1 billion prescriptions annually
versus 300 million in Canada
- Generic drug manufacturers continually lower prices to undercut
competitors for the same medication in the U.S.
- Generic drug prices are not regulated in Canada
When a new generic drugs is approved for use in the US, the US
Food and Drug Administration provides an exclusive 6-month period
where only one generic drug manufacturer is allowed to distribute
the medication.
Once the 6-month exclusivity has expired, other generic manufacturers
begin to enter the market for that medication and lower prices
to undercut their competitors and gain a larger share of the market
(US population – 293 million versus Canada – 32.5
million).
Over a few years of competition, many US generic drugs become
less expensive than their Canadian counterpart.
